Wizard101 Best Level 130 Death Gear

Last updated 6/13/2020 (updated Road Warrior wand to level 130)

What’s the best Death gear at max level (currently level 130)?  We’ve seen this question many times, so we’ve provided our recommendations about the best Death gear below, in a format to help you compare options.

We’ll take a moment to review our criteria first, since the “best” Death gear depends on your role and objectives.

Our Criteria

We consider the gear listed below the best max level death gear if your wizard is:

  • Questing by yourself (solo)
  • Questing in a group & playing the role of a hitter, or
  • Playing PvP in an offensive or traditional role

If you are questing in a group and playing a support role (i.e., buffing the wizard that is going to hit and/or healing) or if you are playing a very defensive PvP strategy, we assume you are more interested in global resist and outgoing healing.  We suggest that you check out Cody’s guide on gear with the best outgoing healing, as it includes several high-resist death gear options as well.

There are three types of recommendations, depending on your focus:

1. Damage Focus

Typically used against opponents with high block, such as bosses.

  • Primary objective is to maximize damage
  • Secondary objectives are power pips, accuracy and pierce

2. Critical Focus

Typically used against opponents with low block, such as mobs.  Some PvP builds focus on high critical as well.

  • Primary objective is critical
  • Secondary objectives are damage, power pips and accuracy

3. Balanced

Typically used in PvP or against bosses that hit hard (e.g., Storm Titan anyone?):

  • Primary objective is to provide decent damage and several helpful stats, including universal resist, power pips, accuracy, pierce and important jewel sockets
  • Many balanced items contain some critical, although it’s typically not a “critical” objective (pun intended)

Gear Set Bonuses

Gear set bonuses provide stats in addition to whatever stats the gear provides, based on how many pieces of that set you’re wearing.  We list relevant bonuses here so you can consider them when selecting gear for your Wizard.

  • So it has basically been 1 year plus 3 days later since last update, (june 13th 2020)
    i don’t mean to rush but uh has any progress been made since then?

    😐

    • They are deliberately not updating it as they are making changes due to the new updates that, among other things, change how gear damage is calculated. For example, going pure offense may not be as good of an idea because they are basically scaling down the damage that you can have. Also they want to revamp the template too. That’s probably what’s holding them. Also there are a ton of options available with the new Karamelle gear anyway.

  • You guys should update this page soon. Would be super useful for PvP players looking for gear since the new key boss came out.

    • This is something we’ll be working on in the near future. Due to the imminent changes in the stat system, we agreed that we shouldn’t go through with any updating projects until the changes occurred. Now that they have, some of our writers are planning to work on updating these guides.

  • I don’t know if any of the other class guides are updated yet but when will this one be updated?, it’s kinda dated now i would think.

    • Please be patient, we will get to it in the near future. Our writers are still questing through the world, as are many other players.

      • Hello! Thank you so much for the write up/guide! I’m wondering if this guide will ever be updated, not when. I’m sure you guys are busy I would never mean to rush, I’m just wondering if it will be. Either way, it is super helpful. Gives you a clear goal of what to farm for. Thank you so much for this

        • They will be for sure! We are currently discussing and planning the process and what to include. As of now there aren’t any major changes except anything introduced with Karamelle.

          • hey i was just wondering if all the top gear has been updated??

          • Very soon. Unfortunately, its a lot more work than it seems especially now that stats feel different.

  • Sycorax’s Crook of Illusions dropped by the Aethyr Elemental is pretty good.

  • It may not be the “best” at anything, but I believe Dworgyn’s hood alone should be listed in the hat section, for the mass feint alone.

    • I do agree, it wouldn’t be bad as an alternate balanced option. Outside of Mass Feint, it has some pretty nice stats to back it up, especially quite a bit of critical and power pip chance, and even shadow raing.

  • I have a suggestion Kapudan’s Boarding hook, and give a critical hitter on the pet.

    • Kapudan’s Boarding Hook isn’t available anymore (it had death damage by mistake; they let people keep it who bought it before the catch), so not using in sample builds.

  • Can you list all of the stats of the full set builds at the bottom? I just want to know if I can try to shift some stuff around if the defense or something is too low. Thanks in advance!

    • Just reworked the sample builds section to include typical suggested “best” gear. Would suggest comparing your gear to that and then looking at the stats differences for specific gear pieces. Decided not to include stats for those since it would have been very time consuming to keep updated — sorry couldn’t help ya more.

  • I wish these guides would apply what the accuracy and pip chance are as I’m who will give up a little damage for 100 pips and 100 accuracy & 100 critical

    • Just reworked the sample builds section. Decided not to include stats for those since it would have been very time consuming to keep updated.

  • Wouldn’t this be better?
    hat = dragoon
    robe = tenny
    boots = dragoon
    wand = admiral’s boarding hook
    athame = morganthe
    amulet = shane
    ring = dragoon
    deck = paradox
    mount = ghulture
    pet = Dealer(11%) Giver(7%) Assailant(36%) Striker(28%) Hitter(34%) Thinking Cap Ultra Jewel **** NEEDS MAX STAT****
    = 140 damage 844 critical 😀

    • The jewels will have 3 18 crit circle jewels you can choose to farm these or get 17s or 16s if your pet is max stat, but if not you will likely need 17s or 18s

      The triangle jewels work out nicely because you will have 1 10% pip opal and 1 accuracy opal to achieve 27 accuracy and 97 power pip or you can go double pip chance and get 107% pips but 15% accuracy- only spells you will fizzle is qismah and winged shadow spells

    • Nice catch — got 1% more damage! Updated the guide. Thanks for the feedback.

  • what about the dragoon gear

    • We’ll be updating these guides to reflect the new gear soon. However, this process may take some time, so please bear with us.

  • Thanks to Eevee918 for some pics! Appreciate it.

  • There’s a Kapudan’s Boarding Hook that gives 20% death damage and 4% pierce, better than everything listed. You should update that.

    • I added it for reference. It’s not available anymore (was a special accommodation to wizards that bought it when it incorrectly showed death damage instead of myth) so excluded it from sample builds.

  • Death can have 130% damage and 100% critical.

    Paradox Hat 26D/137C
    Tenn Robe 20D/100C
    Paradox Boots 30D/114C
    Paradox Deck 50C
    Death Seeker’s Talisman 35C
    Tormentors Shredder 195C
    Quad Damage, Double Crit Pet 25D/62C (Crit Striker+Assailant)
    Morganthe Athame 17D
    Paradox Ring 9D/91C
    3x 18 Crit Jewels 54C
    Death Ghulture 3D

    130 Damage, 839 Critical.
    You’re Welcome 🙂

    • Good catch — looks like I forgot about the crit jewel in the ring. Updated. And you’re welcome too! 🙂

    • You can get 152 damage and max crit with 50+ rest and 7500 life

      • Build?

  • For the PVP balance section, could change it to Bonesmasher Robe of Strife because it’s better than Death Lord Cloak of Woe and change Bonesmasher Robe of Strife to recommended

    • Agreed, the only thing that the Death Lord Cloak of Woe has that’s really better is accuracy. Death only needs 18% accuracy to not fizzle (unless things like Black Mantle and Smoke Screen are present). The death paradox hat, Rattlebones robe of strife and Lord of Death’s Razor would be all that’s needed to not fizzle. That frees up the triangle slots for stuff like power pips, shadow pips and spells.

    • I polled the staff and they actually prefer the Baleful Light Brigade Armor since it “has higher stats in everything except accuracy and accuracy is high enough to compensate.” Variety is the spice of life, eh?

      All of those Robes are pretty close in stats, so you could pick whichever one complements your build the best, especially since there are a lot of viable stat combinations with the boots these days.
