A Pirate101 Guide to
Skull Island’s Lesser Companions

Companions are an essential part of Pirate101’s gameplay and story. Unless you’re undertaking some sort of self-imposed challenge, you’ll likely go into battle with a handful of loyal crewmates by your side. But beyond the more well-known members of our crews – fully-voiced companions such as Bonnie Anne, Ratbeard, and Monkey King – there are plenty of other companions we can stumble across and recruit as we journey throughout the Spiral.  This guide to Skull Island’s Lesser Companions is part one of a series dedicated to learning about, and making the most of, these miscellaneous miscreants.

What are Lesser Companions?

Note that, for the purposes of these guides, “Lesser Companions” are any companions that:

  1. Can be recruited for free as a quest reward by one or more classes.
  2. Do not have spoken dialogue outside of their quest(s).

While these companions are quantifiably less powerful than our “storyline” companions – both in terms of raw stats/Talents, and in the number of Epics and Powers they get access to – they can still prove very useful in the right scenarios: they can fulfill specialized roles in your team, act as understudies to your more powerful crewmates should they fall in battle, and offer an element of unpredictability and variety to your battles while questing.

In this guide, I will be sorting and colour-coding Skull Island’s Lesser Companions based on which class gets them for free.

How will you grade these Lesser Companions?

I’m going to give each companion a grade from one star (not recommended) to five stars (a great choice). I will be grading them based on the Epics they have access to, the number of promotions they receive, any unique powers or Talents they may have, and usefulness of the role(s) they can fill in a team.

These grades will be within the context of PvE combat, though much of what I say will still be somewhat relevant to PvP – use these companions in ranked PvP at your own risk!

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

Buccaneer Companions

Water Mole Slingman (★☆☆☆☆)

Class: Musketeer

Recruits at: your level +3

Promotes at: N/A

Buy for: 2,995 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete The Soggy Crusade in The Gold Mine

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Water Mole Slingman

Summary

This rebellious, randomly-named Water Mole is sadly lacking in all departments.  Between his low range, limited Epic pool, and the fact that he deals physical damage with his attacks – making him even less effective against armoured opponents – there is little reason to recruit this little guy.

Suggested Builds

Counter-Slinger

  • Parting Shot 1
  • True Grit 3

Jack of All Slings

  • Parting Shot 1
  • Quick Adjust 1
  • Double Tap 1
  • True Grit 1

Parting Gift

  • Parting Shot 3
  • Double Tap 1

Swashbuckler Companions

Tricky Vinny (★★★★☆)

Class: Musketeer

Recruits at: your level +2

Promotes at: levels 30 and 56

Buy for: 4,495 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete The Great Infestation in Gullet

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Tricky Vinny

Summary

A surprisingly effective companion unlocked early in your pirate’s journey, Tricky Vinny is only held back by an unimpressive starting epic, as well as a lack of anti-melee firepower in the form of Overwatch or Burst Fire.

That being said, over time this ornery frog can grow into a respectable counter-Musketeer, with both Quick Draw and True Grit in his epic pool.  He also packs a rare Mega Hit Power after his second promotion, and he starts with the even rarer passive ability Jump – allowing him to potentially evade melee pursuers by leaping over obstacles and gaps on the battleboard.

Suggested Builds

Counter-Musket

  • Parting Shot 1
  • True Grit 3
  • Quick Draw 2

Gritty Opportunist

  • Parting Shot 2
  • True Grit 2
  • Double Tap 2

Frogfather’s Regards

  • Parting Shot 3
  • Double Tap 3
Crazy Monquistador (★☆☆☆☆)

Class: Musketeer

Recruits at: your level +3

Promotes: N/A

Buy for: 2,995 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete The Heart of Darkness in Ancient Ruins

Crazy Monquistador

Summary

A former Monquistador Crossbowman who’s a few bananas short of a barrel, this ex-cultist’s unfortunate starting Epic and lack of later promotions puts him in a rough spot.  While he does eventually gain access to a variety of rank 3 Epics, he never quite gets enough of them to be useful.

Suggested Builds

Off-Kilter

  • Return Fire 1
  • Overwatch 3

Crazy Accurate

  • Return Fire 1
  • Quick Adjust 3

Crossbow Chaos

  • Return Fire 1
  • Overwatch 1
  • Double Tap 1
  • Parting Shot 1

Privateer Companions

Nanu Nanu (★★☆☆☆)

Class: Buccaneer

Recruits at: your level +2

Promotes at: level 30

Buy for: 4,495 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete A Fishy Business in Jonah Town

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Nanu Nanu

Summary

This scrappy Water Mole can be a real thorn in your enemies’ side with his array of pre-emptive and movement-based Epics, but his lack of raw damage means that he’ll struggle to deal with opponents one-on-one.

Suggested Builds

Defensive Spearman

  • Cheap Shot 1
  • Repel Boarders 2
  • First Strike 2

Scrappy Brawler

  • Cheap Shot 1
  • First Strike 2
  • Blade Storm 1
  • Flanking 1

No Running

  • Cheap Shot 3
  • Repel Boarders 2

Musketeer Companions

Romba (★★★☆☆)

Class: Buccaneer

Recruits at: your level +2

Promotes at: level 37

Buy for: 4495 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete Rite of Passage in Valley of the Gold Monkey

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Romba

Summary

Romba is a unique companion that, I must admit, I overlooked for a long time.  But aside from the fact that he gets a promotion when many others don’t, he is one of the *very* few Buccaneer companions who are able to learn Witch Hunter.

Sadly, he lacks the damage-dealing Epics to really capitalize on this – but he may still have a niche use in certain battles.

Suggested Builds

Superstitious

  • First Strike 1
  • Witch Hunter 2
  • Blade Storm 1
  • Second Chance 1

Annoyingly Persistent

  • First Strike 2
  • Second Chance 1
  • Flanking 1
  • Blade Storm 1

Fight Everyone

  • First Strike 2
  • Blade Storm 3

Witchdoctor Companions

Bones McGee (★★★☆☆)

Class: Musketeer

Recruits at: your level +2

Promotes at: levels 22 and 39

Buy for: 4,495 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete A Chill Wind in Flotsam Docks

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Bones McGee

Summary

Ah, Bones McGee. While I’ve always had a soft spot for this bony fellow, it’s hard to recommend buying him on account of his lacklustre selection of Epics. That being said, the fact that he can be promoted at all, let alone twice, is quite surprising – as is his usefulness for Witchdoctors at higher levels.

Will he out-shoot Bonnie Anne? Not a chance. Will he occasionally surprise you in the mid-to-late levels when you bring him in after forgetting to renew his crew task? Absolutely.

Suggested Builds

Reliable Finisher

  • Quick Adjust 3
  • Double Tap 3

Area Control

  • Quick Adjust 2
  • Double Tap 2
  • Parting Shot 2

Inescapable

  • Quick Adjust 2
  • Double Tap 1
  • Parting Shot 3
Batacuda (★★★☆☆)

Class: Buccaneer

Recruits at: your level +2

Promotes at: N/A

Buy for: 4,495 Crowns

How to unlock: Complete A Deadly Catch in The Gold Mine

Lesser Companions Part 1 - Batacuda

Summary

The humble Batacuda, despite never promoting, has a few things going for it.  It can function as a respectable melee counter-punch unit with access to Vengeance Strike 3, and it has the rare ability to Fly over terrain and obstacles during battle – even hovering over inaccessible areas to frustrate melee opponents.

Furthermore, with the recent buffs to Beast companions, the Batacuda can find a home in a Beast-heavy gimmick team as a brawling Buccaneer tank.

That being said, there isn’t much else that this companion can do to outshine other options you’ll come across.  If you’re looking for a dependable Buccaneer to watch your back, you can probably do better than this fish.

Suggested Builds

Deadliest Catch

  • Vengeance Strike 3
  • Second Chance 2

Shoal Snapper

  • Vengeance Strike 2
  • Blade Storm 3

Pack Hunter

  • Vengeance Strike 3
  • Blade Storm 1
  • Flanking 1

That’s all for now! Check back in later for my next installment, where I’ll be talking about the Lesser Companions found in Monquista and Valencia!
