Wizard101 Free-To-Play Guide
We’ve all been there. You’ve completed Triton Avenue and decided to continue questing either in the Firecat Alley or Cyclops Lane. You tried entering through the gate and got greeted by an unpleasant paywall. Even though Wizard101 is a free-to-play game, in order to continue exploring the Spiral you’ll need to either buy the premium zones or a membership. …or continue reading.
Thus, I’ve decided to discuss some tips for players who aren’t willing to invest money into the game. This guide can give you some useful information for making your free-to play experience more enjoyable.
1. Complete all the available quests
You’ve probably already completed the storyline quests in Triton Avenue, so your next step should be completing all the remaining side quests. Many NPCs in the Commons, Ravenwood, Unicorn Way, Olde Town and Triton Avenue with a yellow exclamation mark above their heads are looking for you help, so don’t be shy and talk to them! Note that you won’t be able to complete all the quests, since some of them require purchasing a premium zone. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to unlock them after you’ll finish reading this guide.
2. Pay a visit to old foes
Alright, you’re done with all the quests and your level should be around 9. What now? Well the next step is to become an Initiate wizard! (Which is basically just reaching level 10). Quests were your primary source of experience. However, since you’re ‘out of quests’ now, you can only get experience from battles. Visit some old bosses or mobs, blade up and defeat them multiple times. Which enemies are best? Read on to find out!
Don’t forget that the more pips (and mana) your spells cost, the more experience you’ll get!
3. Get ready for farming
Many enemies across the Spiral drop unique loot. This loot can be hats, robes, boots, wands, athames, amulets, rings, pets, or even mounts! Certain bosses can even drop pieces of gear from the Crowns Shop! Below is a list of some free-to-play droppable items:
Elven Storm Cap – Dropped from the Sergeant Skullsplitter and Harvest Lord (Triton Avenue)
Myth Sprite (Pet) – Dropped from the Rattlebones (Unicorn Way)
Various 1-Day Mounts – Dropped from the Kraken (Triton Avenue) and Lady Blackhope (Unicorn Way)
Lord Nightshade, who can drop many premium items, isn’t included on the list, since access to his tower requires completing Firecat Alley and Cyclops Lane. However, his tower is in a free-to-play zone, so a friend may be able to teleport you in.
4. Do the Pagoda and Winterbane Gauntlets
You can get access to these gauntlets from the Castle Tours Headquarters, in the Commons. Search for a top rated houses and choose one. Many will contain both the Midnight Sun Pagoda and Winterbane Hall. The bosses here are tougher than the ones in Wizard City, so it’s advised to bring some friends along. Complete the both instances twice, and you should reach level 12. You can also do other dungeons, but those require owner’s presence.
5. Choose certain schools
This is optional, but advised. Choosing either Storm or Balance as your primary school will let you get Stormblade or Balanceblade respectively at level 12, since doing these quests doesn’t require owning premium zones. Death Prism can also be obtained, but you need access to the Nightside to complete the quest.
Here is a list of required zones for other schools:
Fire – Firecat Alley and Cyclops Lane
Ice – Colossus Boulevard
Life – Colossus Boulevard
Myth – Cyclops Lane
6. Fishing, Monstrology and Gardening
Side activities are a big part of the game. Each one of them is beneficial in different way. Fishing, available at level 7, lets you catch both fish and chests. While you can sell fish for gold, chests can contain some unique loot, like pets, gear, wands, or even mounts.
Both Gardening and Monstrology are available at level 12. Gardening allows you to grow plants, which are the main source of snacks and reagents. Monstrology lets you extract enemies and use them either as minions or as housing guests.
7. Hatch a better pet
Pets are also a big part of the game. Eventually after you get your first pet, you can train it by playing games and feeding them snacks. Once it reaches the adult stage, you can hatch it with other pets. The hatchmaking Kiosk was a big addition to the game, as it allows you to hatch with any available pet, without waiting in the Hatchery.
You can choose from many different pets, but the most useful talents include Spell Proof, Spell Defying, Pain-Giver, School-Giver and School-Dealer. You can learn more about pets here. However, this can be pretty costly, so don’t be discouraged if it takes time to get enough gold.
8. Pay attention to events
The Beastmoon hunt, Deckathalons, The Lost Pages and the 5 Boxes – these are the events that occur in the Spiral throughout the year. While Beastmoon and Deckthalon offer a different form of gameplay, The Lost Pages and the 5 Boxes offer new dungeons. Furthermore, all of these events are accessible for free-to-play players!
During the Lost Pages event, you’re able to obtain various items from the Dragon’s Hoard pack. The 5 Boxes event has new, interesting quests from a mysterious Professor in 5 Worlds – including Wizard City. The quest in Wizard City can be completed without owning a Premium Zone! As with many instances, the instance in the Telegraph Box offers you some experience and some great rewards. Keep an eye on Wizard101’s Twitter for the event announcements.
9. Do FreeKI Games
FreeKIGames offers many different mini-games. Upon completing them, you can earn various rewards, ranging from gold, pets, regeants, snacks and even CROWNS. You can earn up to 100 crowns per day by completing 10 trivia quizzes (10 crowns per passed trivia). You can also use our handy Trivia Machine, if you don’t know all the answers. In order to complete the Wizard City story-line quests, you’ll need to unlock both Firecat Alley and Cyclops Lane. Each zone costs 750 crowns – that’s 1500 crowns for Wizard City.
Therefore, it will take you exactly 15 days to open both premium zones for FREE. This method is time-consuming, but really useful. After you successfully unlocked these two zones, you can unlock the remaining Wizard City zones or start unlocking Krokotopia. The decision is up to you, but consider buying Colossus Boulevard if your wizard is either life or ice, since you’ll need this zone for your level 12 spell.
