Wizard101 Catacombs Gear (Level 130)

The Fall 2019 Wizard101 Test Realm brings with it some new gear for level 130 wizards! You can find this gear in the Catacombs zone/dungeons in Golem Court.

What are They and Where Do I Get Them?

There are 3 tiers of gear available. Each tier has an entire set of gear (hat, robe, boots, wand, amulet, athame, ring). Tier 1 is a crafted set that also requires pieces from the Tier 2 gear. Tier 2 can be crafted and also is dropped from bosses).  Tier 3 are dropped.

Catacombs Dragoon Gear – Tier 1

 

The Dragoon Gear can only be dropped from Skeleton Key Boss Fellspawn, or crafted.  The name of the vendor is Zasha Emberforge and she is located in the main area of the Upper Level of the Catacombs.

You can reach the the area by entering the Drains in Golem Court and then walking to the Catacombs (you’ll need to unlock the area through questing first).

The gear recipes show that they require the associated Vanguard gear item (e.g., the Fire Dragoon Robe requires the Fire Vanguard Robe).  But the good news is that the Vanguard item can ANY school (e.g., you can use the Vanguard Robe of any school to craft the Fire Dragoon Robe).

The recipes also require the following new reagents:

  • 300 Alchemical Extract
  • 50 Alchemical Salts
  • 5 Alchemical Crystals

All of these new reagents drop in the various fights in the Catacombs.  In addition, Zasha has two transmute recipes:

  • 10 Alchemical Extract for 1 Alchemical Salts
  • 10 Alchemical Salts for 1 Alchemical Crystals

Catacombs Vanguard Gear – Tier 2

 

The Vanguard Gear can be crafted as well.  The recipes are available from Zasha Emberforge and require:

  • 180 Alchemical Extract
  • 30 Alchemical Salts
  • 3 Alchemical Crystals.

The Vanguard Gear also is a rare drop (estimated around 2% of the time) from the following Catacombs bosses:

  • Hats: King Detritus (Abandoned House dungeon in The Drains)
  • Robes: Sir Greggor and General Greyflame (Foetid Crypt dungeon in Upper Catacombs; note that you can get the robe from the first fight with Greyflame)
  • Boots: Prince Viggor (Viggor’s Tomb dungeon in Upper Catacombs — was Viggor’s Drake before update 11/21)
  • Wands: The Devourer (Edge of the Spiral dungeon in Lower Catacombs)
  • Athames: Renegade Druid (Avalon dungeon in Lower Catacombs)
  • Amulets: Stharilith (Valencia dungeon in Lower Catacombs)
  • Rings: The Devourer (Edge of the Spiral dungeon in Lower Catacombs)

Catacombs Soldier Gear – Tier 3

 

The Soldier gear seems to drop from most of the bosses and mobs in the Catacombs dungeons.  At a minimum, you can get the Soldier gear from the same bosses that drop their respective Vanguard Gear.

As a reminder, you’ll reach the Catacombs by entering the Drains in Golem Court and then walking to the Catacombs (you’ll need to unlock the area through questing first).

 

How Do They Compare to Current Gear?

Hats

  • Offensive (no universal resist) — very similar to the Paradox gear
  • Slight upgrade in all Paradox stats, except:
    • Damage is slightly lower
    • New hats have some pierce (Paradox hats didn’t)
  • The highest tier hats also have a 0-pip mass trap.

Evaluation: Most wizards using the Paradox hat will want to upgrade.

Robes

  • Defensive — focus on health, resist and block (similar to many of the recent robes)
  • Could be of interest given:
    • Significant health, block, and universal resist
    • Also has power pip chance, a little accuracy and a little pierce

Evaluation: With very limited accuracy, no critical and no damage, many Wizards may choose to continue with their Tenni’syn, Darkmoor or Bonemasher robes.

Boots

  • Similar to the Paradox boots, with the following differences:
    • Significantly more universal resist
    • More health and critical
    • Slightly less power pip chance
    • Similar damage
  • Provide Sharpend Blade and Potent Trap cards, which can be helpful for stacking.

Evaluation: These are widely considered to be the best part of the new gear. It’s definitely worthwhile to get them.

Wands

  • Similar to Paradox wands:
    • More damage and block
    • Significantly more pip conversion

Evaluation: Not as attractive as some Crowns options, like wands from the Sinbad Hoard or Pandamonium Hoard packs. In addition, some wizards may continue to use Revered wand for pierce

Athames

  • Comparison to Darkmoor and Morganthe athames:
    • Significantly more health
    • Slightly less damage
    • No power pip chance
    • Has significant critical block
    • Less healing boost

Evaluation: Somewhat interesting option (choosing between health and power pip chance)

Amulets

  • Upgrade to Rasputin amulets in stats
    • More health
    • Slightly more critical block
    • Similar resist

Evaluation: If you don’t value offensive stats like pierce or critical, this amulet is certainly worthwhile. Even if you prefer offense, the defensive stats are very compelling, regardless. The Dragoon and Vanguard version have 4-pip AoE spell cards with solid damage (Dragoon has 2 and Vanguard has 1), so potentially very helpful to Life and Death wizards

Rings

  • Upgrade to the Paradox Ring
    • More health, critical and damage
    • For Life, more outgoing healing (no incoming)
    • For other schools, more incoming healing (no outgoing)

Evaluation: Solid ring for offensive PvE builds. Likely outclassed by the Level 100 Duelist Ring for PvP.

      Where exactly do the soldier boots drop? I can’t find ANY of the tier 3 soldiers boots on the wiki. Do they even exist?

        I believe I got a Soldier Boots drop from the mob in the Drake dungeon. Also, for most of the gear the mobs in the dungeon usually drop the Soldier gear, so I’d suggest the mob in Prince Viggor’s dungeon too.

      I stated this before, but clearly this has NOT been fixed. The Amulet does NOT do an AOE. Why are you promoting false information? In the Description it says “Each one contains 2 4-pip AoE spell cards, so potentially very helpful to Life and Death wizards” (FinalBastion), yet this is NOT true! I don’t understand how it is so hard for someone to fix this.

      * Under the The Federal Trade Commission Act allows the FTC to act in the interest of all consumers to prevent deceptive and unfair acts or practices. In interpreting Section 5 of the Act, the Commission has determined that a representation, omission or practice is deceptive if it is likely to:

      mislead consumers and

        Hi there, we at Final Bastion are not Kingsisle so we have no way to fix the Amulets. That being said, the card on the amulets is intended to be an AoE and a developer on twitter has confirmed they will be working on a fix.

        Calm down, these are just people trying to help people farm not the actual company Kingsisle. They are in no way selling you this information. If somethings wrong, take it with a grain of salt, but saying they’re violating the FTC (when they are not) is overkill.

        Did you really just threaten a website legally about something that’s 100% out of their control because you don’t have a 4 pip AoE and it may take a couple months before it’s patched.

        Lol, you really are passionate about the free information you get from people that are just trying to help. Calm down! Mistakes happen and even if they were charging you, you just take it to the right department and they’ll fix it. Oh, pictures were taken from the actual drop.
        FYI: demanding may get you what you want once in a while, but will not really take you anywhere. Chill & enjoy life and heck! Enjoy the game!

      I think it bugged out only people who farmed this morning have gotten the hat I’ve farmed all day since this afternoon not one vanguard hat dropped must be bugged again

        Not really i got the Hat 3 different schools during all day it’s just they are rare and it’s your luck. They didn’t said it’s a guarantee you will get it is just any other boss. It took me 3 days to get the boots and they were dropped cause people were getting them. And Prince Viggor must drop amulet or athame not hats.

          I believe the items drop in quest order. Hats, Robes, Boots, Wands, Athames, Amulets and Rings = Each drop from a separate instance in the quest order =
          King D. (Hats) >> Greggor Instance (Robes) >> Drake (Boots) >> Viggor (Wands) >> Druid (Athames) >> Satha (Amulets) >> Devourer (Rings).

              I can confirm myself that I got the hat from King D. a day or so ago (after the patch). The only other change seems to be that boots now drop from Viggor and not the Drake.

        Apparently, at the moment no one is dropping the hats as they seem to be missing from the drop tables. This will probably be fixed in the upcoming maintenance.

      FYI, for the people that don’t know, if you’re planning to craft the tier 1 gear pieces, you don’t need the school-specific vanguard gear piece. You need it to just be a vanguard gear piece. I just found that out after continuing to farm although I already had the death robe (crafting the fire robe).

      I can confirm that I got the death vanguard robe from the first boss in the Foetid Crypt dungeon. So, assuming he drops all of them, you don’t have to farm sir greggor for the robes.

      I have been farming the first two battles in the foetid crypt, working on my monstrology (now that there are level 16 and 17 undead to extract). They drop an occasional soldier’s gear. So far I’ve gotten the Death knife, Ice boots, and Myth wand. But this morning, General Greyflame dropped the Vanguard Vibrant Armor. Not sure if I want to make it, because it has no damage bonus, but there it was.

          I knew there were rank 17 in Empyea, but who wants to farm a boss like voltergeist for 17 exp a pop? The new undead in the catacombs are just minions. Much easier to farm, especially when you can get 2-4 minions at a time.

      My Death wizard recipes call for Vanguard gear as one of the ingredients. Where do you get the Vanguard gear? I have been unable to find anything on that topic.

        Vanguard gear seems to be dropping from bosses such as the Devourer. So far, I observed the life ring dropping from it. We will keep you guys updated!

      I am not a big fan of crafting. Besides this gear is good, but these new reagents will be hard to get, including that it will take a long time to get all of them just for one gear. This crafted gear should become dropped gear, or even better, it shouldn’t be crafted. The simple thing that should really happen would be to just buy the good gear, simple as that, no crafting, no farming, no problem. Who would agree?

        Regarding crafting, I’m a fan, think KI could have leveraged it more, and would have liked to see KI use it add more diversity to crafted gear, as they did in Khrysalis (e.g., rings with high school resist, athames with pierce, etc.). I agree with you that it’s good for them to give you different options to obtain the gear the way you want to get it: farming, crafting, purchase.

        The Alchemical reagents drop pretty regularly in the Catacombs and there are transmute recipes, so they shouldn’t be a big issue. The issue at the moment appears to be the Vanguard gear, which has had a low drop rate so far in test realm.

        sadly that is how its gonna go.. if it were up to me i would have made only 3 sets 1 for a tier 2 set to make the tier one set which is this “all over the place” type of gear and then a hand full of gold key bosses that actually dropped what people wanted BUT it has a no pvp symbol so no one is whining about it being broken there and the good amount of people savagely disappoint in not just the gear but the accessories would have something to farm for not only that i’d make the boss keys craftable which they honestly should have been since the first day they came to live makes no sense how they arent
